Canada’s women’s soccer team has advanced to the medal round after defeating host Great Britain 2-0.
The Canadian squad was leading by that score at the half and they hung on to win the game and move on to the semi-finals. The goals were the first that the British squad had given up in the tournament.

Canada took the lead early in the first half on a goal by Jonelle Filigno in the 12th minute. Team captain Christine Sinclair scored in the 26th minute.
Canada faces the top-ranked United States in the semi-finals on Monday. Canada has beaten the U.S. in women’s soccer since 2001.
A win against the U.S. would send the Canadian team to the gold medal game. A loss means a shot at bronze.
This is the furthest a Canadian soccer team has gone in an Olympic tournament.
France and Japan square off in the other semi-final.
