REGINA – A false-bomb threat this week forced both Jack Mackenzie and St. Gabriel schools into “secure the building mode”, but according to the Regina Police Service (RPS), they weren’t the only ones.

Police say the threat was part of a robocall that affected schools across Saskatchewan and beyond.

“Saskatoon notably being one, but there is reports around the U.S. and the U.K. of getting similar calls,” RPS spokesperson Les Parker said.

In Regina, school bomb threats have been received before.

“We had a bomb threat in Winston Knoll Collegiate in April,” Parker added.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

That threat resulted in a 15 year-old Regina boy charged with mischief.

But this recent international robocall threat has both police and security experts wondering if there’s a connection.

“Law enforcement needs to pull their resources together, all the jurisdictions where this happening need to compare their notes,” security expert David Hyde said.

RPS say they are in contact with other agencies, but cannot release details of their investigation.

However, if someone is caught, there can be serious consequences.

“A bomb threat hoax is public mischief and it is a criminal code offence,” Hyde explained.

The Regina Catholic School Board says they’ve received 15 bomb threats this school year alone.

According to police, investigations are still-ongoing for some bomb threat cases and if someone is charged they can face up to two years in jail.
