Toronto police are appealing for witnesses after two men, one of them on a family bike ride, were shot in an apparently unprovoked Victoria Day attack downtown — the second random shooting over the long weekend.

Police say the bystanders were in the area of Sherbourne and Howard streets around 8:15 p.m. Monday when an assailant opened fire.

The pair were rushed to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They did not know each other and one was biking with his family when the shots rang out, apparently at random, police said Wednesday.

A male suspect fled in a silver Hyundai sedan but a detailed description has not been released.

It was the second of two seemingly unprovoked shootings over the holiday weekend.

Police say a man just off a boat cruise was shot by an unknown suspect as he came out of a Portlands parking lot at 333 Lake Shore Boulevard East around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

The suspect in that shooting is described as black man, aged 20-25, 5’10″ – 6’0″, who was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants. He was seen fleeing in a silver Toyota sedan.

Police do not believe the two incidents are connected.

The weekend violence comes as the city grapples with a spike in gun deaths and shootings, a trend tragically punctuated with the slaying of a pregnant woman earlier this month.
