Burrard, Lions Gate bridges, hot spots for motorcycle crashes

Roads leading to the Burrard Bridge and the Lions Gate Bridge in Vancouver are some of the deadliest spots for motorcycle crashes, according to new map data released by ICBC.

There have been more than a dozen motorcycle crashes in the past few months in B.C., some of them fatal.

ICBC has now released an interactive map showing crashes across the province in the last five years, broken down by region and specific intersection.

ICBC says “motorcyclists are eight times more likely to be killed and 41 per cent more likely to be injured in a crash than other road users.”

They have released some tips for sharing the road with motorcycles, both for bikers and drivers.

There are more motorcycle riders on the road than ever before. ICBC says 98,000 bikes were insured in 2011 compared to 49,000 in 2001. However, motorcyclists are eight times more likely to be killed and 41 per cent more likely to be injured in a crash than other road users.
