VERNON – There’s a new, specialized resource in Vernon for children in government care who require treatment for complex behavioural challenges.

A five bed Complex Care Community Residential Resource has been opened where workers deal with youth ages 7-18 who have severe emotional, mental and developmental issues.

The North Okanagan Youth and Family Services Society operates the facility.

“We recognize the importance of a collaborative, dynamic and multi-level approach when working with children, youth and their families and we are committed to providing the best possible supports in our short-term residential program,” says society executive director Jan Shumay in a news release.

Various techniques are used to calm and stabilize the youth who are then taught how to better manage their behaviours.

Staff can also call in professionals, such as psychologists, when more intensive help is required.

A similar facility has been opened in Prince George.

After a year, they’ll be evaluated to determine if the treatment model is a success that can be used in other communities.
