KELOWNA — Donations are already coming in to the fundraising campaign to build the new Okanagan Rail Trail from Coldstream to Kelowna.

Individuals, businesses, clubs and service groups are being encouraged to get behind the drive because as organizers say “it takes a community to create a legacy”.

Project Manager Andrew Gibbs says the trail won’t happen unless the general public gets behind the initiative.

“The local governments have contributed all the money they could to buy the corridor, but to get it developed we’re going to rely on fundraising campaigns. So, really it’s up to a grass roots effort to mobilize and raise the funds for it. Once the funds are in place, we’ll be able to undertake construction.”

The cost will be about $160 per metre of trail over the 48.5 kilometre stretch. The goal is to raise $7.86 million dollars to develop the trail.
