A teen charged with manslaughter in the death of a Calgary father in 2014 was sentenced to three years Friday. The teen, who was 16 at the time of the attack on Gabriel Okeynan, has already served 16 months in custody and will serve the remaining time under conditional supervision.

Justice Scott Brooker said he didn’t see any point in returning the now 18-year-old to custody, and said the conditional supervision will promote re-integration into society.

Okeynan met two teens at the Marlborough LRT Station. The 45-year-old was later robbed and stabbed before he stumbled to the nearby Marlborough Mall, where he was found in a pool of blood on June 20, 2014. The father of four later died in hospital.

The second teen, who was 13 years old at the time of the attack, pleaded guilty to manslaughter. They were both initially charged with second-degree murder.

The teens cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

The judge imposed numerous conditions Friday, including a curfew, a weapons prohibition and that he live with his mother.
