STEINBACH, Man. – A southern Manitoba community that had been concerned about too little rain this summer now has too much.

Streets, parking lots and yards in Steinbach (STYNE’-bak), southeast of Winnipeg, were turned into rivers and small lakes when an overnight storm dumped an estimated 80 millimetres of rain.

The downpour occurred in the space of about one hour.

The city’s storm sewer system was overwhelmed by the gush of runoff, resulting in several vehicles, including an RCMP cruiser, stalling in deep puddles.

Conditions had improved by the morning commute and there are no reports so far of flood damage.

Surrounding communities appeared to escape the drenching. (CHSM)
