WATCH: Parents fed up with overcrowding at schools in Surrey are taking a new approach to vent their frustration. Tanya Beja explains – May 10, 2016

Surrey parents are so frustrated with overcrowding in local schools that they are taking their message to the streets.

Cindy Dalglish has printed dozens of lawn signs that read, “Our Schools are Over Capacity – Where Will Your Kids Go?”

She is selling the signs for $13.50 and she hopes they will be snapped up quickly.

“Our schools are overcapacity in our neighbourhood. We have five elementary schools within a 10 block radius and they’re all overcapacity.”

Surrey is the province’s largest school district and is expecting another 1,000 students this fall. With nearly 300 portables already in place, parents say it’s time for the province to build more schools.

“We need a stalling of development until there’s infrastructure in place,” Dalglish says. “I’m worried about my kids and their future. You don’t know what education will look like in four or five years.”

The school board has asked the city for a moratorium on development in the areas of Clayton, Grandview and South Newton until the province funds the construction of more schools.

Surrey Mayor Linda Hepner says a moratorium is not an option.
