Some passengers aboard the first cruise ship of the season to dock in Saint John, N.B., have come down with norovirus.

The British-based Balmoral arrived in port Monday with a complement of 915 passengers and 520 crew.

The latest health and medical news emailed to you every Sunday.

A spokeswoman for Health Canada says 16 passengers and one crew member are suffering from the gastrointestinal illness.

Molly Kehoe says such illnesses are common on cruise ships and only the common cold occurs more often.

She says there is a low public health risk, but passengers and crew are advised to observe proper hygiene and wash their hands regularly.

The ship is expected to leave Saint John tonight.
