Profile: James Holmes, suspect in Colorado theatre shooting

COLORADO – Who is James Holmes, the man suspected of opening fire at the premiere of the new Batman movie in Colorado?

Armed with multiple guns, Holmes allegedly killed 12 people and injured 71 others on Thursday, just a few kilometres from the site of the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School.

According to the FBI, Holmes is a 24-year-old man, 6 feet 2. He has no criminal history or links to terrorism.

His apartment, full of sophisticated explosives upon investigation, is located within 10 miles of Aurora, Denver where the killings took place.

According to Lt. Andra Brown of the San Diego police, Holmes was raised in San Diego but moved to Colorado to pursue his studies.

Several local media confirmed that he attended Westview High School in San Diego.

He was completing a doctorate in neuroscience at the University of Colorado-Denver when has abandoned the idea last month, confirmed a spokesman for the university.

In a statement cited by NBC San Diego, his family said “our heart goes out to those affected by this tragedy and their families and friends. We request the media respect our privacy during this difficult time. We are cooperating with the authorities in San Diego, California and in Aurora, Colorado.”
