The U.S. Navy released a video on Monday showing sailors onboard the USS Momsen taking target practice on an abandoned lifeboat they discovered in the Pacific.
The USS Momsen was deployed last month as part of the U.S. 3rd Fleet Pacific Surface Action Group, and came across the deserted rescue vessel on Sunday.
The video posted to the Defence Video and Imagery Distribution System website by Petty Officer 1st Class Jay Pugh shows sailors using a heavy turret gun on the ship’s deck to “destroy” the empty lifeboat.
Hundreds of rounds were unloaded and recorded piercing the shell of the boat.
Smoke and splashes from bullets hitting the water could be seen.
A mother of one of the sailors commented on the video.
“Yes just saw my daughter shoot for the first time,” wrote Henrietta Russell. “Proud mom.”
