Regina man facing attempted murder charges after dangerous police pursuit

REGINA – A 39-year-old Regina man is facing attempted murder charges after a woman was assaulted early Monday morning.

At 5:40 a.m. Monday police were called about a domestic-related assault in progress at a business on the 400 block of McCarthy Boulevard North. The caller said that a man was assaulting a woman in a truck.

Police spotted the truck travelling eastbound on 7th Avenue North and then south on McCarthy Boulevard. Officers reported that the female looked like she was in distress.

As police were trying to pull over the truck they saw the driver repeatedly striking the female passenger and preventing her from leaving the vehicle.

Police continued to follow the truck through the city and out of Regina via 9th Avenue North.

Police say the truck was travelling at dangerous speeds as it fled westbound on Dewdney to Highway 730 and then to Highway 642. As the truck slowed to make the turn west from Highway 642 onto Highway 1, the truck collided with a marked Regina Police Service car.

At this time the victim jumped out of the passenger side door. Police say the woman suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

At this point Regina police discontinued their pursuit.

The truck continued west on Highway 1 and was later located by Moose Jaw Police in a ditch at the junction of Highway 1 and Highway 39.

The suspect was arrested and treated by EMS for self-inflicted injuries.

39-year-old Aaron Michael Murphy of Regina is charged with Attempted Murder, Kidnapping and Evading Police.

Murphy has been remanded in custody until his court appearance on Monday afternoon.
