WINNIPEG — After spotting flames out his back door, a North Kildonan father jumped into action to get his daughters to safety.

“I woke up to glowing sunshine outside of my daughter’s bedroom window,” said Robert Epp, who quickly called 911 after watching a fire spread from his Oakland Avenue garage to his home.

He was able to get his two daughters, aged 8 and 10, out of the house before his roof caught fire.

“I got the girls up and we are going as far away as we can and we started knocking on neighbours houses just to get the alarmed and up just in case there were explosions,” said Epp. “We all came out safe and alive and the neighbours came together to help us out and take us in.”

Epp said he is thankful for the support of people who live around him.

“The neighbours gave them pajamas and kept them warm,” said Epp. "My daughter came out with her favourite bear she got when she was born and they are happy nothing else has happen."

Epp said he is waiting for the fire inspector to finish sorting through the home before he will be allowed back.

“Possessions are replaceable but people are not and I am thankful we got out,” said Epp.

In the meantime he is doing his best to support his daughters.

“They are asking a lot of questions I cannot answer,” he said. “They are troopers.”
