3 teens charged in Saskatoon salvage yard fire

SASKATOON – Three teens have now been charged following a fire at a Saskatoon salvage yard. Police say two other kids have been warned, but not charged, as they are under the age of 12.

The fire happened on April 19 at AJ’s Salvage at the corner of 14th Street West and Avenue P South.

Witnesses reported seeing kids trying to start fires in the area.

Five kids who were detained for questioning by officer were later released into the care of their parents.

On Tuesday, police said a 14-year-old believed to be responsible for lighting the initial blaze was facing charges of arson and break and enter. He is scheduled to appear Friday in Saskatoon provincial court.

Two other youth, 13 and 14, are facing charges of arson, break and enter, and breach of recognizance. They were scheduled to appear in court on Thursday morning.

Damage is estimated at $250,000 and the owner isn’t insured because the yard contains mostly scrap parts.
