Greater Vancouver Zoo welcomes two one-year-old Siberian tigers

There are some new cool cats in town.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo has added two one-year-old Siberian tigers called Hana and Hani.

The sisters were born on May 22, 2011 at a zoo in South Korea and now weigh about 180 lbs. and 130 lbs., respectively, Jody Henderson, general manager at the zoo, said in a news release Saturday.

Henderson said Siberian tigers are listed as endangered with an estimated 3,000 to 5,000 left in the world. She added that tigers are hunted for trophies, and different body parts of the tigers are used in traditional Chinese medicines.

“Our hope for the sisters is that they can become part of the Species Survival Plan Program, which works to cooperatively manage specific, and typically threatened or endangered, species population,” she said, in the release.

Henderson said the addition marks the first animal exchange between the greater Vancouver Zoo and its sister zoo in South Korea since the two formed a partnership in November 2010.
