American discount retail giant Target has confirmed the first of its new store locations in Manitoba.
The developments had already been signaled well in advance, but the news release Thursday makes it official the first of its new outlets in this province will open in spring and summer 2013.
Target stores are due to open in the spring at the Shoppers Mall in Brandon and Kildonan Place Shopping Centre in Winnipeg. A Target location at Winnipeg’s Southdale Centre is also set to open in the summer of 2013.

The stores take over locations occupied by Zellers. Target says it will spend $10 million remodeling each location and expects to employ 150 – 200 people at each store.
Target is also in discussion with developers in Winnipeg about putting either a new-built store at the site of Canad Inns Stadium once it’s decommissioned, or at the site of the Zellers at Polo Park mall.
Target plans to open 125 Canadian locations in 2013. It says it will confirm later this year additional locations “in 2014 and beyond.” Target has 1764 stores in the United States.
