Inmate at Alberta Drumheller Institution dies serving second-degree murder sentence

A 60-year-old inmate at Alberta’s Drumheller Institution died Tuesday, Correctional Service of Canada said Thursday.

CSC said Rodney Hirsekorn died at a local hospital in Drumheller, located about 135 kilometres east of Calgary.

Hirsekorn had been serving an indeterminate sentence for second-degree murder since Dec. 15, 2006.

His family has been notified.

“As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances of the incident,” CSC said in a statement. A spokesperson said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Hirsekorn was serving the sentence for the deaths of his elderly mother and sister. The bodies of 78-year-old Kathleen Hirsekorn and her 44-year-old daughter Colleen were found in March 2005 in their Duluth Bay home in Winnipeg.
