EDMONTON – Two Edmonton properties were designated as Municipal Historic Resources Wednesday.

The William Lowes Residence and Cameron Block were added as historic designations, bringing the number of protected properties in Edmonton to 128.

William Lowes was built in the Strathcona neighbourhood at 9837 – 84 Ave. in 1913. The house was built with concrete blocks that look like stone, which was unique in the city at that time. An open verandah that was originally part of the home will be restored as part of the rehabilitation work.

Cameron Block was part of the city’s early commercial development on 97 Street, one of Edmonton’s earliest commercial thoroughfares in the 1900s. The Cameron Block will be rehabilitated and restored to enhance the cultural and identity of the area.

The city says it will designate more properties as Municipal Historic Resources.

“We are always working to improve how people understand and experience our city and our heritage. These two designations exemplify how we are continuing to preserve and value our city’s history,” Scott Ashe, heritage planner, said.

The city’s Historic Resource Management Plan outlines Edmonton’s mission to identify, protect and promote the preservation and use of historic resources.
