A two-year-old boy was taken to hospital with serious injuries after being run over by a vehicle Thursday night.

“As a mother was backing out of her driveway she ran over her two-year-old child. EMS responded (and) the child was taken to the Children’s Hospital,” Sgt. Dave DenTandt with the Calgary Police Service said.

It happened in the southeast community of Copperfield at about 7 p.m.

Police said the boy suffered a broken femur.

Officers remained on the scene for several hours Thursday night.

“It is a tragic accident, but in cases where there’s any life-threatening injuries we do have to do a thorough investigation,” DenTandt said.

The investigation includes what led up to the incident.

“Not sure why the circumstances of the child being out behind the vehicle, just a tragic accident,” DenTandt said.

Police said there were no witnesses to the incident but it has been deemed an accident.
