A second employee has been fired from an elementary school on the Beardy’s & Okemasis Willow Cree First Nation and is now facing criminal charges.

In a media release issued on Thursday, the band’s council said RCMP told the principal of Chief Beardy Elementary School last week that an employee had been arrested and charged.

This is the second employee that has been terminated from the school in as many days.

On Wednesday, April 13, the band issued a media release saying an employee had been terminated and that the school was working with the RCMP, Willow Cree Education staff, Child and Family Services and Willow Cree Health.

Councillors also said in the release that the firing of the first employee was guided by the Saskatchewan Child Abuse Protocol of 2014.

Both of the former employees are facing criminal charges and the council said the two incidents are unrelated.

“We need to reiterate that this other situation, while similar in nature, is unrelated and has nothing to do with the students of CBMES” said Candace Scott, education councillor, said in the release.

Rosthern RCMP said on April 4, they investigated a sexual assault on the Beardy’s & Okemasis Willow Cree First Nation. As a result of the investigation, a 23-year-old man from Beardy’s First Nation was arrested on April 5 at a residence on the First Nation, which is located about 90 kilometres north of Saskatoon.

He is charged with three counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference and five counts of sexual exploitation.
