Lotto Max fever in Edmonton

The largest Lotto Max pool in Canadian history has Edmontonians rushing to purchase last minute tickets.

Ticket buyers will have one chance at a $50 million jackpot – plus 50 chances to win $1 million.

We asked some residents buying tickets at Southgate Mall what they would do if they won:

“I’m sure I could find ways to spend it, I’ve got lots of kids and lots of friends,” says Paula. “This is my first ticket in about a year, but I heard it on the radio this morning and I thought, why not?”

“I would probably do a lot of travelling,” says Robert.

“I would buy a big house on an acreage because I have four children and I would retire,” says Debbie. “I don’t usually buy them, but maybe this will be the lucky one.”

This is the fourth week that the $50 million Lotto Max jackpot has been carried over, leading to tonight’s big jackpots.

The $100-million potential prize total is the biggest in Lotto Max history. The second largest was in June 2010 when the grand prize was $99-million.

But there are a lot of skeptics out there, since the odds of matching the seven winning numbers are about 28,633,528 to one.

However, Shirley and Ed Ploof say it’s not impossible. Ten years ago they won $221,700 for their 50th wedding anniversary. Now they are hoping for another big pay out for their 60th anniversary.

“It can happen, we know it can happen,” says Shirley Ploof.

Ticket purchases can be made until draw time at 7pm MST on July 6, 2012.
