WEST KELOWNA — A West Kelowna road now looks more like a sinkhole after it was washed away by a mudslide Monday morning.
A wall of mud roughly four feet thick poured down the hillside, bringing down trees and debris and cutting off Glenrosa Road near the Telemark Cross Country Ski Club entrance.
It’s estimated 2000 cubic meters of mud came sliding down into the Telemark parking lot.
Argo maintenance crews are on scene fixing underground piping affected by the slide and building a temporary bypass.
A trailer home sits just above the slide area and the couple inside were initially stranded, but a makeshift lane way has now been constructed so they are able to come and go safely.
Water from a creek nearby apparently carved out a new path, saturating the earth and causing the slide and weakening Glenrosa Road so much so it collapsed under the pressure.
The affected area is on provincial land, so the provincial governments is footing the clean-up bill.
The road isn’t expected to reopen until Friday.
