Military detonates obsolete ammo in Dundurn, Sask.

There was a countdown and a big bang as ammunition blew up in an explosion over 200 metres into the sky near Dundurn, Saskatchewan.

Just another day for the 17 Wing Detachment, who are taking part in a training exercise called Operation Rolling Thunder II.

The soldiers are getting rid of obsolete ammunition – more than 24-thousand rounds of one type called high explosive squash head.

A military official says the propellant in the explosives have stabilizers that degrade over time and can become dangerous.

After burning or exploding the ammunition, the officers must also pick up all the residue and dispose of it as hazardous waste.
