Charlize Theron says it’s hard being pretty in Hollywood

Forget it if you’re only moderately attractive or overweight. The real struggle in Hollywood comes when you’re strikingly gorgeous, at least according to Charlize Theron.

In an interview with GQ, the 5’9” model and actress commented rather candidly about the way women are treated by casting agents. And no, it’s not what you think: Theron, 40, explains that being an unusually attractive woman has worked against her in many situations.

“Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that’s the end of the story,” Theron said. “How many roles are out there for the gorgeous, f–king gown-wearing eight-foot model? When meaty roles come through, I’ve been in the room and pretty people get turned away first.”

Theron famously donned a prosthetic nose and gained 30 pounds to play serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2004 movie Monster, for which she won the Best Actress Oscar. Last year, she shaved her hair into a buzzcut to play Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road — another role seemingly at odds with her statements to GQ.

In the interview, Theron goes on to discuss ageism in Hollywood.

“We live in a society where women wilt and men age like fine wine. And, for a long time, women accepted it,” she said. “We were waiting for society to change, but now we’re taking leadership. It would be a lie to say there is less worry for women as they get older than there is for men. It feels there’s this unrealistic standard of what a woman is supposed to look like when she’s over 40.”
