SASKATOON – Never count out the underdog. The Saskatoon Contacts proved that on Sunday by beating the Winnipeg Wild 4-3 in double overtime to claim their third Telus Cup West Regional championship title in the past five years.
“We worked for a month-and-a-half to make it here,” said Ty Prefontaine after scoring his double overtime tournament clinching goal.
“It’s an amazing feeling.”
The Contacts suffered through their fair share of heartbreak leading up to Sunday’s monumental victory. Saskatoon failed to make the playoffs after posting its worst regular season record since 2008. The Contacts were frustrated when they missed out on the post season, but they knew they’d have a chance for redemption at the Telus Cup West Regional tournament.
“We were kind of choked that we didn’t make playoffs, but we worked a month and a half as hard as we could. We got hard skates every Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and workouts everyday. “said Prefontaine. “We were ready for the tournament.”

Saskatoon will represent the West region when the Telus Cup kicks off on April 18 in Quispamsis, N.B.
And considering the West has won seven of the past 11 national titles, it’s safe to say the Contacts won’t be labelled underdogs this time around.
