CALGARY-The city’s first block party for Syrian refugees is planned in the community of Forest Lawn. Volunteers and donors who have played an important role to help settle Syrian newcomers, are expected to be there.
The event is called the “little Syria” block party and takes place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on April 3rd. A complex in the neighbourhood is dubbed “little Syria,” because it houses 25 Syrian families. The Syrian Refugee Support Group Calgary, has helped organize the event which includes a pot luck with games and activities for the children.
Organizers hope the event will bring together the new residents and their non-Syrian neighbours.
Forest Lawn has become home to baby Yousef who made headlines for having so-called backup moms look after him for a week at Alberta Children’s Hospital.

The complex in Forest Lawn is also where the first Syrian baby was born in Calgary as part of this year’s wave of Syrian refugees to the city.
Dozens of other Syrian families are expected to join in the afternoon festivities.
