Toronto Mayor John Tory says he is in no hurry to erect a statue or name a place after former mayor and city councillor Rob Ford following his death last week.
“These things are always left for a period of reflection, I think in terms of producing the best kind of result,” said Tory on Thursday.
Talks of renaming a location, with some even suggesting the Etobicoke Civic Centre, was brought to the forefront last week after a petition was launched to immortalize the former controversial mayor with a statue.
“The city’s policy in fact when it comes to naming different things and so on, provide for a period of two years to pass, when someone is deceased, so you can think about these things carefully and do the right thing, and do it in the right kind of way,” Tory said.
“I’m sure people will take that up in due course but it won’t be something I think would be addressed immediately.”
Ford passed away on March 22 after an 18-month struggle with a rare form of cancer.
The former mayor was laid to rest on Wednesday following a funeral service at St. James Cathedral.
