Manitoba Liberals lose four candidates due to nomination form problems

WINNIPEG – The Manitoba Liberal Party has lost four candidates for the April 19 election due to problems with their nomination forms.

Elections Manitoba says candidates in four rural constituencies — Agassiz, Arthur-Virden, Lac Du Bonnet and Lakeside — had improper address information for people who signed the nomination papers.

The agency says the nominations were submitted so close to Tuesday’s deadline, there was no chance for the candidates to go back and collect the correct information.

This is the first time since 1999 that the Liberals will not run a full slate of 57 candidates.

The party, which holds one legislature seat, has faced uphill battles over the years in fundraising, attracting candidates and organizing for elections.

After the 2011 election, Liberal executive director Dennis Trochim pleaded guilty to forging nomination signatures get Liberal candidates in place in two constituencies.
