Saskatchewan Roughriders release veteran defensive back Lance Frazier

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders released veteran defensive back Lance Frazier as the final cuts were made at training camp.

The 31-year-old was one of 22 Riders released Sunday.

Frazier spent all six of his CFL seasons in Saskatchewan and was a regular in the team’s defence after a breakout year in 2008.

The five-foot-10, 192-pound West Virginia product had 159 tackles, one sack, 15 interceptions, one touchdown and four fumble recoveries with the Riders.

Last season Frazier, who was named a West Division all-star in 2009, failed to register an interception for the first time since his rookie season.

Saskatchewan also put offensive tackle Dan Goodspeed on the nine-game injured list. The Roughriders are going to start moving Goodspeed into a coaching role.

“We’re looking at moving Dan into more of a coaching role, so he’ll help out with coach Kris Sweet and I think he’ll get started on his coaching career,” said head coach Corey Chamblin.

Added Chamblin: “He was right there (in competing for a starting position). He had something left, but then when the injury happened, I’m like, you know, hey, there’s no better time.”
