It is true that firefighters are never really off-duty.
Ten-year-old Caddy, a female pit bull, is alive thanks to Burnaby firefighter Dillon Peters.
When neighbours in Surrey saw smoke pouring out of the house where the animal lives, and noticed the ‘Beware of Dog’ sign, they alerted Peters who lives nearby.
No one else was at the home when the fire broke out, so Peters broke in and rescued the dog.
“I went around and tried all the doors and they were all locked, so we broke the window on the front door, reached in, undid the latch and freed the pit bull that was inside,” said Peters.
He said Caddy is OK after coughing a little when she was first brought outside.
