The Calgary Fire Department responded to reports of a strong smell of natural gas and bubbling on the north side of St. George’s Island Tuesday afternoon.
ATCO Gas said it found a minor leak on a gas line feeder to the Calgary Zoo.
Officials said the zoo has a secondary feed line and the facility won’t be affected. They are working to shut down the leaking line by Friday.
ATCO also suggested the leak does not pose any threat to public safety or the environment.
Carol Henke with the Calgary Fire Department suggested a very small amount of gas was being released. Hazmat crews were called in to assess the situation and said the levels were not dangerous.
Alberta Environment is aware of the situation and confirms no environmental risk is posed by the leak.
Jamie Hanlon with Enviornment and Parks said in a statement Tuesday, “we will monitor the impacts to ensure the environment is appropriately protected.”
There’s still no word on what caused the leak.
