Bike thefts on the rise in Vancouver

Bike thefts are on the rise in Vancouver, with more bikes stolen so far this year than in the past five years.

Police say between January 1 and May 31, 554 bikes were reported stolen, compared to 338 in the same period last year and 490 in 2010. Thefts are occurring all over the city, but especially in the downtown core and southwest Vancouver.

People keeping bikes on balconies are warned that thieves are scaling apartment buildings to steal bikes, throwing them down the ground before riding off. However, most bikes are being stolen from bike racks and public places.

Police say bike owners should record their bike’s serial number, and use a sturdy lock. Any modifications made to the bike should also be reported if the bike is stolen.

On Tuesday, June 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the West End – Coal Harbour Community Policing Centre will be holding a Bike Safety Day at Ceperley Field in Stanley Park. They’ll be offering free bike stamping and registration and officers and volunteers will be on hand to answer any questions about bicycling safety and bylaws.
