Toronto to overhaul online registration process for camps, recreation programs

The City of Toronto wants to make it easier for the public to sign up for camp and recreation programs by overhauling the online registration process.

“80 per cent of these registrations take place online,” said Mayor John Tory during a press conference at the Regent Park Aquatic Centre Tuesday morning. “There is a profound need to make sure it is better.”

The announcement comes after dozens of parents lined up for hours Tuesday to register their child for spring and summer programs in North York.

A number of illegally parked vehicles were also towed near the North York Civic Centre as parents waited in line for the coveted registration spots.

The city says it processes more than 600,000 registrations for more than 80,000 courses at 135 community recreation centres, 40 indoor arenas and 121 pools each year.

Tory says the online registration system is outdated and requires a major update.

“Next to public transportation, I think the one thing I hear about would be to do with how to sign people up for these programs,” said Tory.

“We don’t have the ability right now to have the point of sale service. It’s the type of service the public expects.”

Tory said he has put together a three-member Recreation Technology Advisory Group that will help guide short and long-term improvements to the system’s user experience.

The public is also encouraged to offer feedback by registering their comments online.

The city says it has already implemented several improvements in the registration process over the years such as increases in server capacity and efficiency, adding web-based payments and e-receipts, and the introduction of online purchase of ferry tickets and last-minute booking of available ice times to the system.
