Michelin has announced a new tire project that will temporarily increase production at its Pictou County site.
The two-year project will see Michelin increase the number of winter tires it produces in response to consumer demand.
The plant will be making more X-ICE Xi2 tires, which the company says drivers want to keep up with challenging winter weather.
“Our Michelin Pictou County team welcomes the opportunity to build more tires for our customers in Canada, the U.S. and overseas.”
Seventy to 90 temporary and contract jobs will be added to the current production team at the plant, starting as early as June.
Michelin says 70 per cent of the new tires will stay in Canada, 30 per cent will be exported.
500 laid off in 2014
The company laid off 500 employees in 2014. More than 200 of those people have retired, 100 took severance and 95 relocated.
The company is confident they would be able to bring people on from the local area, possibly bringing back those who retired two years ago.
The Michelin plant in Pictou currently employs 600 people, between plant workers and those who work in the corporate offices.
