The City of Vancouver is set to release a much-anticipated report about just how many homes in the city are sitting empty.

There has been speculation in the past over how many residences in Vancouver are, in fact, vacant, but there has been no definitive effort to quantify these numbers so far.

Green Party Vancouver City Councillor Adriane Carr says she hopes the report will be comprehensive.

“I want to see the methodology,” says Carr. “I want something robust that can be replicated and policy can be based on.”

She also wants this to be an annual report that will hopefully trigger an action from the city council, as empty housing adds pressure to the already hot real estate and rental markets.

“If the numbers [of empty homes] are high, people will be upset,” say Carr. “We have a housing crisis in this city. People can’t afford homes. The very idea that homes are being purchased and then being left empty is such a kick in the guts.”

A presentation will be made at city council on Tuesday morning.

The city told Global News they won’t be releasing any further information before the presentation, however.
