Don Getty remembered as family man and statesman at state funeral

EDMONTON – Former Alberta premier Don Getty was remembered as a family man and a statesmen at his funeral in Edmonton today.

Getty died last week at age 82, after years of declining health.

About 600 people, including family members, former political colleagues and Premier Rachel Notley came to pay respects in the service at the All Saints Anglican Cathedral.

Getty’s sons recalled a father who never missed watching his kids at sports, who treated Sunday family dinners as sacrosanct, who always took time to toss the football to kids in the neighbourhood, and who fiercely loved his wife Margaret.

Getty’s former political aide and friend, Patrick Delaney, recalled a man who lived by the creed of treating people with respect, being tough but fair in negotiations, and above all keeping one’s head in a crisis.
