Winnipeg Transit smart cards could roll out by summer

WINNIPEG — A long-awaited Winnipeg Transit smart card system could be up and running by the summer.

Transit said they’re close to working out the bugs in their new SmartCard system, according to a report at Thursday’s finance committee.

The technology would eliminate the need for paper tickets and monthly passes, as riders would swipe to pay their fees.

The $17 million system was originally supposed to be in place in June 2013, but technology issues kept pushing the date back.

Last June, Calgary cancelled its electronic card system after experiencing too many issues.
