TransLink has reversed its decision to close fare gates until they solve issues around accessibility for people with disabilities.
The transportation authority announced earlier this week that they planned to close all fare gates at SkyTrain and SeaBus stations, including ones that were left open for people with disabilities who are unable to tap in and tap out with their Compass Cards.
At the time TransLink said people who need assistance will have to call an attendant ahead of time to help them open the gates.
Jane Dyson of the The Disability Alliance of BC was shocked by what they called a temporary solution.
“It is not a very dignified way for people with disabilities to access services in the same way everybody else accesses public transit,” she said.
TransLink Minister Peter Fassbender said Wednesday that more work needs to be done.
“Our message to them is you have to have a solution that ensures unfettered access to every person no matter what their circumstance,” he said.
