Yorkton unveils new water treatment plant

For the first time since the new plant began supplying water to Yorkton residents – the public was given a tour of the new $33 million dollar endeavour.

It’s been in service for a year now, replacing an outdated system.

“We had four different water treatment plant facilities that were not connected,” said Yorkton Mayor James Wilson.

“We could not expand them,” added Yorkton Environmental Services Director Michael Buchholzer. “They were in locations where they were closed in residential areas.”

“What were created is the first in North America as far as we know to this size and this capacity, whereby we have an environmental sensitivity to it,” says Wilson.

When completed, the system will use backwash water to irrigated multi-purpose athletic fields and also create a wetlands habitat that will hopefully encourage the spawning of fish.

The Governments of Canada and Saskatchewan contributed $7.36 million to the project, the City of Yorkton paid for the rest, chipping in $18.3 million.

The plant is ready for Yorkton to double in size and can still be expanded if need be.
