The GreenTRIP program provides funding to municipalities throughout Alberta to help create sustainable public transit. A total of $415 million of the $2 billion originally committed to GreenTRIP projects remains in the fund, and is available for applicants.

Speaking at a Calgary news conference, Transportation Minister Brian Mason said the infrastructure spending will create much-needed jobs “employing construction workers to build transit project and transit operators to run them.”

“Support for transit is support for all Albertans.”

According to the province, $130 million is available to Calgary-region municipalities to complete their total allocation of $800 million.

Other municipalities outside of the Calgary and the Capital regions have access to $285 million of the original $400 million total. The Capital region’s $800 million has already been allocated.

Applications for projects will be accepted until the end of June 2016, with plans to announce the approved projects by the fall of 2016.

Applicants must be prepared to contribute a minimum of one-third of the capital cost of the project, and also outline how the project will help reduce greenhouse gases. The province believes GreenTRIP projects could result in an estimated 1-million tone reduction in greenhouse gas emissions over tern years.
