Asbestos causes evacuation of Downtown Regina office building

REGINA – Employees were evacuated from a downtown Regina office building Tuesday after asbestos was found in a pipe construction crews cut through on Friday.

The crew working on the Canada Place building at 1870 Albert Street were repairing a leak on the 6th floor in the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety offices (LRWS) and cut through a drain pipe.

On Tuesday morning the Ministry learned about a positive test results for asbestos in the pipes, immediately suspended business and implemented a precautionary evacuation of around 90 ministry employees.

The building was thoroughly cleaned. Air tests done before and after the cleaning were both negative for asbestos. Staff are expected to return to the building this afternoon.
