Nova Scotia’s $2-million plan to combat childhood obesity

HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government will spend about $2 million over the next year to help reduce childhood obesity and associated health problems.

The province has released a plan that includes funding for consultation with schools, municipalities and health facilities.

The province will also look at ways to give children more free access to sport and recreation centres.

One in three Nova Scotians between the age of two and 17 is said to be overweight or obese.

Poor diet and inactivity put many more young people at risk for chronic disease and other health issues.

The province launched a study into childhood obesity last year and sought public input and guidance from a scientific advisory panel.
