Alberta’s new 825 area code now available

EDMONTON – Alberta now has another telephone area code. The Western Telecommunications Alliance said starting April 9, the area code 825 became available to people applying for new service across the province.

The alliance, which includes Shaw Communications, Telus, Rogers and Bell, said there has been a dramatic increase in demand for communications services and technologies.

The new code will be introduced gradually in areas when the supply of numbers in the 780, 403 and 587 codes run out.

403 was the original area code for all of Alberta. Then, in January 1999, the province was split into two sections, and the northern half received the new 780 area code.  The area code 587 was introduced province-wide in September 2008 and mandatory 10-digit local dialing came into effect.

The new area code was announced by the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission over concerns Alberta would run out of phone numbers by the summer of 2016.

The area code of 368 has also been set aside for the future.
