With over 60,000 spectators each year, Mike Payette has some big shoes to fill as he takes over as artistic director.

“What I want to look at is how to diversify the audience even more,” he told Senior Anchor Jamie Orchard.

The daily email you need for 's top news stories.

He plans to achieve that by promoting stories from smaller local communities.

“I think Geordie is not only a theatre for all audiences, but has the potential to be a theatre for all people,” he said.

The multitude of productions cover all ages and allow audiences to understand the world through different eyes.

Payette strongly believes children are the future and wants to better represent the younger generation.

“We, as adults, can learn from that lens and hopefully be better people ourselves,” he said.

Having been in Geordie’s previous shows, Payette has come full circle and expects to continue the legacy.
