That’s what makes the one between Variety, the Children’s Charity and the Manitoba Registered Music Teachers Association (MRMTA) so special.

The two combined once again in early February for their annual Musicthon.

To date, over $250,000 has been raised to benefit inner city kids who can’t afford music lessons of their own.

The idea was started by a piano teacher years ago.

“She did it for a chance for any teachers in Manitoba who teach guitar, voice, violin for their students to help other kids,” said Gina Wadell, Musicthon coordinator.

Students receive pledges to raise money, and performances take place usually throughout the weekend.

“You know, not only is it an opportunity to perform in front of a group, but they’re also very aware of why they’re here,” said Glory St. Germain, a registered music teacher.

“They’re proud to be doing their part and it’s kids working to support kids.”
