Advocates believe it’s a change that should have been made a long time ago.

Some riders say they like the so-called skid lids because they’re more comfortable than regular helmets.

However, even the manufacturers point out that the beanies provide almost no protection in a crash.

Helmets must comply with standards set by the US Department of Transportation, Snell Memorial Foundation (2005 or 2012) or the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe.
