SASKATOON – The Lighthouse Supported Living announced Friday that funding constraints have forced the shelter to reduce hours for a service helping people under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The stabilization unit had been open 24 hours per day for just under one year.

“People still have a safe place to sleep, but unfortunately if they’re seeking that safe shelter, that safe refuge during the day, we’re just unable to provide that at this time,” said DeeAnn Mercier, communications director at The Lighthouse.

The unit is now open from 4 p.m. to 8 a.m. CT daily.

A $4 million project was announced last November, which expanded the unit’s capacity from 20 beds to 38 beds.

Representatives from The Lighthouse have met with members of Saskatchewan’s Ministry of Community and Social Services to discuss the funding challenges.
