CALGARY – Calgary police have confirmed that there has been an increase in car prowlings in the city’s southeast, specifically along Hubalta Road.
On Thursday, Calgary Police Staff Sgt. Geoff Gawlinski told Global News the majority of incidents seem to be happening around 3 a.m. and they are similar in that windows are smashed and loose change is taken.
Area residents were first to alert Global News about the issue and sent a picture of an alleged suspect.
Police have confirmed they have a person of interest they would like to speak with, but have not determined how many people may be involved.
Gawlinksi asked residents in or around Dover or Erin Woods to contact police at any time if they notice anything suspicious.
“We’d rather check it and (find out) it’s nothing important than miss it when we could have done something about it.”
He also suggested residents try to protect themselves by parking in well-lit areas and keeping all valuables out of sight.
The victims who spoke to Global News said they first noticed the break-ins around four weeks ago. They reported that on some nights over the past few weeks, they were hearing of up to nine incidents where vehicle windows were smashed and small amounts of change appeared to be stolen.
Gawlinski confirmed that since the end of December, his district has dealt with 50 incidents.
