REGINA – Kevin Goforth once again took the stand Tuesday morning before the defence rested its case.

The 40-year-old and his wife, Tammy Goforth are facing charges in the death of a four-year-old girl and the alleged abuse of her two-year-old sister while the children were in their care in August of 2012.

The Crown spent much of the morning going over Kevin’s statement to police after he was arrested in 2012.

“We wouldn’t think of the stuff the prosecutor is accusing us of.” – Kevin Goforth

The Crown read from a transcript of the police interview when Kevin agreed with police that Tammy had “stopped caring” about the girls leading up to the older one being rushed to the hospital.

Kevin said he didn’t realize he was giving a statement to police at the time. The Crown responded by reading a transcript of police reading Kevin his rights.

Another part of the transcript the Crown read out to the court quoted Kevin telling the police the girl’s “feet were tied together” by a strap.

On the stand, Kevin was crying and his voice broke as he denied the statements. He said he had been questioned for two days and barely remembers what he said, stressing repeatedly that words were put in his mouth.

He also told the jury the girls were sick around once a month but always got better, so he thought Tammy could handle it.

“We would put food in front of them and they would push it away,” Kevin said.

Kevin added he assumed the four-year-old was just sick again.

The Crown argued the Goforths never called for help because they were afraid people would start asking questions and they would be in trouble.

“You let her bleed and be sick on herself…and she was restrained in a fashion that she wasn’t able to clean herself up or help herself or even go to the bathroom without being untied,” the Crown said.

Kevin also denied those accusations.

“That is a lie,” Kevin said.

“We’re not involved in anything in that sort or matter. We wouldn’t think of the stuff the prosecutor is accusing us of.”

Kevin reiterated he loved both girls and that he and Tammy cared for the girls the best way they knew how.
